Hush Support
What Hush does
Hush lives in your menu bar and plays ambient noise to help you focus. It has two sounds:
- Brown: a deep, low rumble, with an adjustable low-pass cutoff from 20 to 500 Hz.
- Speech Blocker: noise shaped to mask nearby voices.
All sound is generated on your Mac in real time. Hush works fully offline.
How to use it
| Action | Result |
|---|---|
| Right-click the menu bar icon | Turn sound on or off |
| Left-click the menu bar icon | Open the controls: noise type, volume, cutoff, and appearance |
| Space (controls open) | Play or pause |
| ⌘Q (controls open) | Quit Hush |
Sound fades in and out smoothly. Hush remembers your noise type, volume, and appearance between launches.
Common questions
I don't hear anything
- Right-click the menu bar icon to make sure sound is on, or open the controls and check the volume slider.
- Check your Mac's volume and that it isn't muted.
- Check the output device in System Settings > Sound. If you switched headphones or speakers while Hush was playing, turn Hush off and on again.
- Brown noise with a very low cutoff is quiet on laptop speakers, which reproduce little bass. Raise the cutoff or use headphones.
The Hush icon is missing from the menu bar
- Make sure Hush is running: open it from Applications or Launchpad. Hush has no Dock icon, only the menu bar icon.
- On a crowded menu bar, macOS hides icons behind the notch or when space runs out. Quit a few other menu bar apps, or use a menu bar manager, to reveal it.
- On newer macOS versions, check that Hush is allowed in System Settings > Menu Bar.
How do I reset my settings?
Quit Hush, open Terminal, and run:
defaults delete com.rahulprabhakar.hush
Then open Hush again. It starts with Brown noise, half volume, and dark appearance.
Does Hush collect any data?
No. See the Privacy Policy.
